The Beaches Talk Madison Square Garden Debut, ‘Edge of the Earth’ Resurgence and New Music

In true New York fashion, The Beaches were so busy running around the city on the day of their Madison Square Garden performance that the first time they took the stage was in front of a sold-out crowd.

“It was such a hectic day. We weren’t able to get a soundcheck, so we had to raw dog the show,” recalls Jordan Miller, the band’s lead vocalist, in the days following the show. “But having the first moment that we were actually in the arena be right before we went on stage was so thrilling. I didn’t want the show to end. It felt like we belonged up there.”

“Raw dogging” MSG might just be the band’s most rock ‘n’ roll move yet. The Toronto-based quartet — sisters Jordan Miller and Kylie Miller, Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman-McDaniel — are currently on tour opening for former One Directioner Louis Tomlinson.

The tour finds the band in the midst of a rapid-fire year. In March, they were named Group of the Year at the Juno Awards for the third consecutive year, the first all-women band to do so. They released a deluxe edition of their 2025 album “No Hard Feelings,” which featured several new tracks, and in May, their song “Edge of the Earth” was featured in the Prime Video sensation “Off Campus.” As the hockey romance series became a global hit, the band’s three-year-old song suddenly was everywhere, resulting in more than 5 million monthly listeners on Spotify for the group.

On June 14, the group released a music video for “Edge of the Earth” to celebrate its renewed popularity.

“It has a new life now three years later because of ‘Off Campus,’ which has been so amazing,” Earl says. “That song has always been a secret hit to us. And now that it’s kind of taking off around the world, we feel very…the word is not vindicated, but I do want to use that.”

Jordan says they were inspired by examples like Charli XCX’s 2020 song “Party 4 U,” which she made a music video for last year after it exploded on TikTok.

“I think it’s really interesting to take a song that was written about Leandra’s ex-girlfriend and put it through the lens of this new life and celebration that it’s having that’s aligned with the ‘Off Campus’ thing,” Jordan says. “So the video is celebrating queer love stories, but it’s also set in a hockey rink, which is a little wink to the fans that have given it this new life.”

“We’ve never stopped playing it at our live shows because it has been a fan favorite. So I think from playing it all these years on stage, it has already taken on a different form,” Earl adds. “We wrote that when I was still dating my girlfriend, then we broke up and that was a tough period. Now we’re best friends. So it’s kind of become a different thing and it’s now everyone else’s song. There are so many people who reach out to us and relate to it in their own way, which is very special.”

The band is named for the neighborhood in Toronto where the Millers and Enman-McDaniel grew up. Kylie and Jordan started taking guitar lessons together at a young age, “because I was super shy and I couldn’t do bass guitar lessons on my own,” Kylie says. Songwriting happened naturally as a rebellion to learning certain chords.

“I didn’t want to learn B minor on guitar,” Jordan says. “So, one, I switched to bass and two, you just write songs without that chord.”

Enman-McDaniel and the Millers have been friends since kindergarten, and had initially started on the guitar before picking up the drums a bit.

“When I agreed to join the band was when I actually started really learning drums,” she says. “I knew two beats. Luckily most of their songs back then were using those.”

They met Earl in high school, who had been planning to go to university to play piano.

“But I joined a rock band instead,” she says.

Eventually they all decided to hold off on going to college and give music a real shot. They played showcases around Toronto and began selling out venues before signing with Island Records when they were 18.

“It definitely felt good, especially to prove to our parents who are watching us not go to university,” Jordan says. “Our mom got to see us meet the Rolling Stones; we didn’t give her a diploma, but she got to see that.”

When they wrap touring, they’ll aim to take a short break to “live a little bit of life and find things to write about” before heading back into the studio to work on new music. (A few new songs are already written.)

“I think the last two records, a lot of them were about heartbreak and pain and I very much [would] like to write a record that’s maybe more about looking for love and finding love — just for my personal [mental health],” Jordan says. “I think for all of our mental health, honestly, it’d be nice to write about that.”

“Sonically, I think we’ve been trying a couple different things in this video, trying to figure out what we want it to sound like,” Kylie adds. “‘No Hard Feelings’ and ‘Blame My Ex’ definitely had that strong ’80s influence, which definitely will be there, it’s part of the core of our sound and stuff, but we’re playing with some new textures, some new things. We’re super excited about this next era – whatever it is. We’re figuring it out.”
