This week, the global cosmetics and personal care industry saw major developments across acquisitions, manufacturing investment and international expansion, alongside executive appointments, regulatory initiatives and new consumer engagement strategies.

Corporate transactions and restructuring led the headlines. Fairfax and Wittington Investments agreed to acquire Boots for approximately US$8.9 billion. Christian Dior appointed two new board members ahead of the Arnault family’s planned restructuring of its controlling stake in LVMH. In Germany, state officials raised concerns over employment and corporate independence following reports of a potential transaction between BASF and Evonik. L’Oréal also appointed advisers to explore options for managing its US talc-related liabilities.

Manufacturing investment and supply chain developments spanned several markets. Unilever invested Sh70 million in solar power at its Kenyan manufacturing facility and committed R100 million to expand global Vaseline production capacity in South Africa. Meanwhile, El Niño-related low river levels disrupted Indonesian palm oil supply chains, creating logistical challenges for producers and exporters.

International expansion was particularly strong among Korean beauty companies. South Korea’s cosmetics exports reached a record US$7 billion in the first half of the year, while the government launched an overseas intellectual property protection initiative for K-beauty brands. Mary Kay introduced a K-beauty skincare collection across 40 markets, and Amorepacific India established a premium division for Laneige and Sulwhasoo. Dr.G expanded its US distribution through TikTok Shop.

Leadership changes reshaped several beauty businesses. Estée Lauder appointed Gaétane Baudry Global General Manager of Bobbi Brown, while its communications chief Meridith Webster stepped down. Scent Beauty named former L’Oréal executive Yoana Land Chief Financial Officer, and Parfums Christian Dior appointed Sophie Gilg General Counsel. Coty named Kara Langan General Manager of US Consumer Beauty.

Regional leadership appointments also featured. L’Oréal Morocco named Gilles Delaunay Managing Director as Laila Benjelloun Touimi became Chairwoman.

Brand partnerships and consumer engagement extended into sport, entertainment and retail. L’Oréal expanded its sports and entertainment marketing through partnerships with Paris Saint-Germain and Plénitude Arena. P&G partnered with the McLaren Formula 1 Team to promote brands including Head & Shoulders and Oral-B across Asia Pacific. H&M Beauty appointed Sharvari as its first brand ambassador in India.

New market entries and retail concepts broadened the industry’s product offering. Birkenstock entered India’s personal care market with its Care Essentials range, while Dua Lipa and Augustinus Bader opened their first permanent Dua boutique in Paris.

Technology and regulation brought further changes. Utah approved a pilot programme allowing AI-powered acne prescribing under defined conditions, while Pakistan introduced new tax rules affecting social media content creators.

The week’s developments centred on ownership changes, production capacity and access to new consumers. The Boots acquisition and potential European chemicals consolidation contrasted with fresh manufacturing investment from Unilever, while Korean beauty companies expanded their international reach. Executive changes, sports partnerships and emerging AI healthcare applications added further dimensions to the global cosmetics and personal care industry’s evolving business landscape.
