When shopping for luxury bedding, there are several important factors to consider — so as to ensure you’re selecting the best option for your preferences and needs. Luxury bedding distinguishes itself from affordable alternatives in multiple ways, per interior designer Amy Switzer. “The material quality, thread count, feel, comfort, durability, attention to detail, breathability, temperature regulation, brand reputation, and certification all set luxury bedding apart from everything else on the market,” she reiterates.
Before investing in luxury bedding, you’ll want to pay attention to the following considerations:
Materials: Bedding made from high-quality materials such as Egyptian or Pima cotton, which are known for their luxurious feel, is always a safe bet. These days, though, cotton’s supremacy is losing its foothold to alternative fabrics like bamboo, hemp, flax, and even, as Buffy’s Breeze Sheet Set will have you know, eucalyptus. We’ll go into specifics later, but be sure to choose the kind of bedding that both feels good to rest on and also scores high in durability, softness, and longevity.
Thread count: Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per every square inch of a given fabric. While a higher thread count does signal a denser weave, potentially smoother texture, and certainty that “it will last more laundry cycles without getting easily worn out,” per Arya, it’s not the only element responsible for a sheet set’s quality. “Sometimes, manufacturers use multi-ply threads (where multiple thinner threads are twisted together) to inflate the thread count without necessarily improving quality,” Switzer says.
Certifications: When shopping for luxury bedding, Switzer advises looking for sets that hold certifications such as Oeko-Tex Standard-100 or those indicating organic, sustainably sourced materials. “These can demonstrate a commitment to quality and ethical manufacturing practices, which is very important,” Switzer tells WWD.
Price: Luxury bedding often comes with a steeper price tag, so consider what you’re willing to spend while being prepared to invest in a quality product meant to last a lifetime. However, as with anything online, also stay cautious of excessive prices that may not necessarily reflect superior quality. We made sure to personally vet everything on this list for your peace of mind, while being considerate of varying budgets.
Quality assurance: Many brands have warranties, which is good news for customers (luxury bedding isn’t cheap, after all!). The logic goes as follows: If a brand has a warranty, this means that it puts trust in its quality, and you, by proxy, can feel confident in your purchase. Warranties can range from a few months to multiple years, during which timeframe the brand will refund your purchase if it’s defective or repair any damages incurred.
The Best Luxury Bedding Materials to Shop
You’ll want to consider your climate environment, overall home aesthetic, and sleeping habits when selecting specific materials for luxury bedding, explains Switzer. “In warmer regions, breathable and lightweight materials, like linen or bamboo rayon, are great choices as they help maintain a cooler sleep environment,” she says. “Warmer and insulating materials such as flannel or thicker cotton might be more suitable for colder climates to provide extra warmth and comfort.”
Linen: “Flax, the fiber used to make linen, has long been valued for its breathability and natural texture and is having a moment. I am a huge fan!” Saana Baker, founder and editor-in-chief of “The Textile Eye,” tells us. “Like hemp, it’s excellent from a sustainability standpoint — growing readily with minimal water and pesticide use.” Some individuals enjoy the natural texture of linen, while others may prefer the smoothness of materials like cotton or silk (“linen sheets do tend to have a rougher hand feel than finer cotton sheets, particularly those woven in a sateen structure, which yields a softer, smoother finish,” says Baker). “For anyone new to linen bedding, I recommend starting with a softened linen rather than a traditional one — it’s a gentler introduction. When in doubt, buying only a set of pillowcases is a wise way to test out the feel,” Baker continues. Looks are important to keep in mind, too. “Fibers like hemp and flax have their own drape and luster that is superior to cotton. Therefore, these two fibers are sometimes preferred over cotton sheets because of their beauty,” Arya shares.
Silk: Silk bedding’s TL;DR is that it’s incredibly smooth, soft, and luxurious. The material is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, making silk a safe choice for individuals with allergies. The smooth surface ensures hair and skin isn’t exposed to friction, which helps minimize breakage and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Cotton: There is a range of cotton that is popular in luxury bedding, differing based on the origin of the material. Egyptian and Pima share similar characteristics, such as long-staple fibers that contribute to their softness and durability. Cotton is highly breathable and wicks away moisture from the body, making it a great buy for those who run hot and might experience night sweats or hot flashes.
Bamboo: Bamboo-derived fabric is a sustainable choice, with a similar softness and feel of silk sheets. It’s also thermoregulating, meaning it provides warmth in cooler weather and the cool feel you’re craving during the summertime. After washing, give the sheets a good shake and stretch out the corners and edges to release wrinkles before they go into the dryer,” Baker suggests. “It also helps to remove them halfway through the cycle if they’ve balled up — shake them out and return them to the dryer to prevent uneven drying and set-in creases.” She also mentions that overdrying is the number one culprit for limiting sheets’ potential.
Linen sheets: “Linen sheets follow similar rules, though they tend to wrinkle more easily. When folding linen, I like to keep a water sprayer on hand to lightly mist the edges and smooth them with my hands,” says Baker. “I’ll often leave them partially folded overnight to let any remaining moisture evaporate before finishing the fold and putting them away.”
Colored or printed sheets: According to Baker, sheets with embroidery, prints, dyed colors, or stitched edges require a bit more care than your typical bedding set. “Stick to warm water (or cold if you are concerned about prints and colors fading), avoid overdrying, and use color-safe bleach if needed. And make sure to check the care labels for any specialty items,” she shares with WWD.
Stain removal: “I recommend soaking heavily soiled sheets or pillowcases overnight in a bucket with a tablespoon of Dawn dish soap and a scoop of OxiClean — it’s surprisingly effective,” says Baker. “Occasional use of regular bleach is fine, too. Just be sure to run an extra rinse cycle to eliminate any residue. I’ve used this method on my own white sheets, including some that are still going strong after two decades. Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets and use wool dryer balls in your dryer.”
