They say three is a trend and in the last few weeks a curious pattern has emerged.
Jonathan Anderson, teasing his resort show in Los Angeles, posted a glittering ladybug bag on his Instagram. Two days prior Joey King showed up at a Miu Miu cocktail event in honor of her curated selection with the brand. On her fingertips were little ladybugs dotting her nails, courtesy of nail artist Elle Gerstein. And then if you spend any time on social media you may have seen vintage Chanel spring 2004 strappy sandals pop-up featuring, you guessed it: ladybugs.
What’s behind this recent uptick of insect accents? You could chalk it up to seasonal tropes now that it’s well into spring but there’s more to it, according to Pinterest’s data expert Sydney Stanback, who has noticed this microtrend bubbling up on mood boards across the site.
“We’re seeing ladybugs emerge as part of a broader shift toward whimsical, charm-driven fashion and beauty moments that feel playful, nostalgic, and a little escapist. On Pinterest, searches for ‘whimsical ladybug’ are up 1,430 percent, while ‘ladybug widgets’ have increased 865 percent and ‘ladybugs aesthetic’ by 360 percent, signaling that people are embracing the motif across accessories, beauty and decor,” explained Stanback. This surge of interest is part of a bigger movement towards joyful, collectible details, especially among Gen Z and younger millennials. And what could be more playful and happy than a little black-and-red insect that has a reputation for bringing good luck?

You can also blame the oversaturation of quiet luxury for the rise of ladybugs, as audiences tire of polished minimalism and seek out more maximalist designs. “People are looking for fashion and beauty choices that feel more expressive and personal,” said Stanback. Going hand-in-hand with this current backlash against bland conformity is also a desire for comfort and nostalgia, especially given how tumultuous the world seems these days. “Individuals are tapping into their inner child, wanting whimsical accessories that feel comforting and familiar while still allowing people to experiment with style in a low-stakes, playful way. For younger consumers, these pieces act almost like wearable mood boosters that bring personality and escapism into everyday dressing,” explained Stanback.
And it’s not just ladybugs flitting into the cultural consciousness — other insects are also seeing an uptick on Pinterest. From embellished butterflies to dragonflies to beetle nail art, it seems like whimsical nature-inspire motifs are destined for their moment in the sun. So the next time you’re looking for a little luck and joy in your life, maybe a six-legged accent might be the solution?
