THE WHAT? BASF has reportedly held discussions over a potential transaction with Evonik, a move that could reshape parts of the European chemicals supply landscape if revived.
THE DETAILS Dealreporter, citing three people familiar with the matter, reported that discussions between the two German chemicals groups have taken place during 2026, although no transaction has been confirmed and the potential structure of any deal remains unclear. One source indicated that a near-term acquisition could be constrained by BASF’s financial position and its immediate focus on the planned IPO of Agricultural Solutions. BASF has appointed Citi, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan to coordinate the flotation, which is targeted for mid-2027. Both BASF and Evonik operate substantial specialty ingredients businesses supplying cosmetics and personal care manufacturers globally.
THE WHY? For the cosmetics supply chain, any combination of BASF and Evonik assets could have implications for ingredient portfolios, manufacturing capacity, customer relationships and competition among major global suppliers, making the reported discussions significant for brands, formulators and other ingredient companies.
