THE WHAT? Plans for Unilever’s new Global Innovation Center in New Haven have moved a step closer, as city officials prepare to approve the next stage of the proposed 200,000-square-foot laboratory and office development.
THE DETAILS The proposed facility at 2 Church Street will form the centrepiece of New Haven’s expanding life sciences and quantum technology hub. The development is backed by millions of dollars in state funding and represents the third and final phase of the city’s Downtown Crossing redevelopment project, which aims to reconnect downtown with the Hill neighbourhood and medical district following the removal of the former Route 34 highway. The project’s development and land disposition agreements are scheduled to be reviewed by the Board of Alders’ Community Development Committee before progressing to a full board vote.
THE WHY? The project will establish Unilever’s Global Innovation Center within a growing research and technology cluster, supporting innovation, regional economic development and the company’s long-term R&D capabilities.
