THE WHAT? Kao USA has voluntarily recalled specific lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in the US and Canada following the detection of Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria.
THE DETAILS The recall affects 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz bottles manufactured between 21 February and 26 February 2026. The impacted lot codes are YR010556 for the 8.5 oz product and YR010566 and YR010576 for the 33.8 oz size. Kao USA said the bacteria pose little medical risk to healthy individuals but may present a higher risk to people with weakened immune systems. The company is working with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove affected products from distribution and has instructed retailers and salon partners to withdraw the impacted lots from sale and return them for disposal. Kao added that it is reviewing its manufacturing practices as part of its ongoing investigation.
THE WHY? The voluntary recall reflects the importance of product quality and consumer safety within the professional hair care market. It also highlights the industry’s continued focus on manufacturing controls and rapid response to potential contamination issues.
