Justin and Hailey Bieber Can Both Be Pilates Princesses

Hailey Bieber is a poster girl for the benefits of Pilates—a strong core, good posture, toned arms and glutes, focus. (After all, she is the mogul behind Rhode.) But back in spring, she shared that she thought it was “a little over.”

“I love Pilates, I really do,” Bieber told TIME. “But I think it’s become a little bit of a fad, and it’s really hard to find really good teachers that care about form.”

And while Bieber had been actively upping her strength training and testing out weighted vests, she still knows there’s really nothing like a good burn at a Pilates class.

Hailey and husband Justin Bieber were spotted yesterday leaving Forma Pilates in Los Angeles after a session, iced coffees in hand. The referral-only, bicoastal boutique fitness studio has long been a go-to for celebrities, from the Hadids to Lori Harvey and Kendall Jenner.

Bieber has been a committed regular for years, often spotted leaving Forma in a coordinating Alo or CSB workout set. This time, she opted for an all-black look with a body-contouring tank top and straight leg yoga pants, a cream cardi tied neatly around her waist. Justin also dressed for the occasion, in an oversized graphic tee, basketball shorts, and SKYLRK boots. (Activewear, as exhibited perfectly on the Biebers, is in flux, as people begin to favor color and personal style when working out again over the uniform look.)

Whether Justin locked in for a 45-minute session on the reformer machine or just waited for Hailey with their iced beverages, a Pilates princess is a gender neutral term. Everyone can benefit from it. Basketball and soccer players and Olympic athletes of all genders have cited low-impact workouts like Pilates, barre, and yoga as key tenets of their fitness routines. Glen Powell, Harry Styles, David Beckham, and more are all on board. (It’s also not the first time Justin has been spotted at the studio, either.) For a time, there was a social media trend showing overconfident gym rat guys getting humbled on the reformer machine, legs quaking as they tried to hit a lunge with 2-pound weights in hand—but we’re moved well past Pilates as a punchline for men, now.

Pilates was originally created by Joseph Pilates, who was a gymnast and a boxer. Pilates for men, specifically, can be a game-changer in a routine. If, for example, a man is only used to strength-based training on the gym floor or running, they’ll be missing out on training deep core muscles: the diaphragm, the obliques, the pelvic floor. After the pandemic, a national chain of Pilates studios reported 71 percent year-on-year growth in membership among men, as cited by GQ.

An impressive transformation comes pretty swiftly if you commit. As Laura Quinn, head Pilates trainer at Alo Wellness Club in Los Angeles, says: “The rise and popularity of reformer Pilates has come from people seeing their personal results quickly,” she notes.

An exercise routine that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and alignment, the workout focuses on core activation: strengthening core muscles improves posture and helps to prevent injuries, while also providing a stable base for the rest of the body. With the spring resistance from the reformer machine and combos that utilize your own body weight, muscles are progressively challenged in controlled, flowing movements. You’ll correct muscle imbalances, improve posture, flexibility, and so much more. Plus, the reformer machine also makes it possible to work parts of the body you may not normally think about during a regular strength training workout.
