THE WHAT? A representative of the Japan Cosmetic Association has been convicted in a bribery case involving University of Tokyo researchers linked to joint cosmetics research projects.
THE DETAILS The Tokyo District Court sentenced Koichi Hikichi, 52, to one year in prison suspended for three years after finding him guilty of providing entertainment and benefits to two former University of Tokyo researchers in exchange for favourable treatment in research arrangements. According to the ruling, Hikichi spent approximately ¥3.8 million on entertainment at luxury clubs and adult entertainment venues between 2023 and 2024. Former University of Tokyo professor Shinichi Sato has also been indicted on bribery charges and dismissed from his position, while former associate professor Ayumi Yoshizaki received a suspended prison sentence in a related ruling. The court said the actions undermined the fairness and integrity of university research operations.
THE WHY? The case highlights growing scrutiny around governance, ethics and transparency in industry-academia collaborations within the cosmetics and scientific research sectors, particularly regarding conflicts of interest and improper influence.
