THE WHAT? International Paper has announced plans to optimise its North American packaging network by closing four facilities as part of its ongoing operational transformation.
THE DETAILS The sustainable packaging company will cease preprint operations at its Richwood, Kentucky facility and close its sheet plant in Aurora, Illinois, along with converting plants in Elk Grove, California and Barrington, New Jersey, by the end of the third quarter of 2026. International Paper said affected customers will be transitioned to other facilities within its network to maintain continuity of supply, while impacted employees will receive severance, benefits and outplacement support. The company said it will focus future investment on higher-value operations and increasing manufacturing capacity across its remaining network.
THE WHY? The restructuring is intended to improve International Paper’s cost competitiveness, optimise manufacturing capacity and strengthen its ability to supply sustainable packaging solutions. For beauty and personal care manufacturers, the move reflects continued consolidation and efficiency measures within the packaging supply chain as suppliers seek to improve operational performance.
