As a Kirati Limbu, it was fascinating to witness the young students authentically express their culture and traditions through their clothes and jewellry. And I wanted to document their pride from their confidence in their full traditional attire to their enthusiastic participation in the event.

The series Sakela at United Gurkha Academy is a project about cultural inheritance. It investigates how traditions are not simply preserved by performing ceremonies but are lived, learned and passed onto future generations through everyday exposure from childhood.

Tirtha Rabin Lawati is a British-Nepali photographer/Filmmaker based in the UK. Working primarily with analogue photography, his practice explores youth culture, diasporic identity, and shifting landscapes. Known for his intimate, documentary approach to photography. Lawati’s work is rooted in nostalgic narrative, tracing stories from his hometown in East Nepal to evolving realities of diasporic family life in Britain.
