THE WHAT? DoorDash is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire US grocery delivery platform Instacart in a potential US$17 billion transaction that would strengthen its position across online grocery, retail and last-mile delivery services.
THE DETAILS The proposed acquisition could be finalised within days, although no agreement has been confirmed. Instacart, which listed publicly in 2023, had a market valuation of approximately US$13 billion before reports of the negotiations emerged. DoorDash, valued at around US$73 billion, has expanded beyond restaurant delivery into grocery and general retail through partnerships with Kroger, Safeway, Aldi, CVS and Target. Acquiring Instacart would significantly expand its grocery fulfilment capabilities and retailer relationships. The reported discussions follow earlier takeover interest from Uber, which is no longer actively pursuing a transaction.
THE WHY? The potential acquisition highlights accelerating consolidation across US digital commerce and last-mile delivery infrastructure. For cosmetics and personal care brands, greater integration between delivery platforms and retailers could influence online distribution, product visibility and access to consumers through grocery, pharmacy and convenience channels.
