THE WHAT? Dis-Chem Pharmacies founder Ivan Saltzman has retired as chairman, marking a leadership transition as the South African health and beauty retailer enters its next phase under CEO Rui Morais.
THE DETAILS Saltzman, who founded Dis-Chem in 1978 and grew it from a single pharmacy into a healthcare and beauty retailer valued at around US$1.7 billion, has reduced his direct involvement in the business while his family retains more than a 25% shareholding. Under Morais, the company is expanding its Health Hub concept, combining pharmacy, clinics, diagnostic testing, telehealth and health insurance services, while continuing to grow its beauty, cosmetics and personal care offering. The transition follows broader efforts to strengthen governance and position the business for long-term growth beyond its founder-led model.
THE WHY? The leadership change represents a significant succession milestone for one of Africa’s largest health and beauty retailers as it shifts from entrepreneurial leadership to a more institutional management structure while expanding into integrated healthcare services.
