THE WHAT? Amazon is reportedly in discussions to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart in a deal valued at approximately US$7 billion, as the technology group strengthens its AI infrastructure and computing capabilities.
THE DETAILS According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon is negotiating the potential acquisition of San Francisco-based Decart, whose software enables developers to switch between different AI chips more easily. Founded in 2023 by three Israeli engineers, the company has raised more than US$400 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Radical Ventures, and was valued at nearly US$4 billion in May 2026. Decart is also developing AI world models capable of generating and simulating three-dimensional environments. The startup previously received early access to Amazon Web Services’ Trainium3 chip, which competes with Nvidia’s AI processors. Discussions remain ongoing, and no agreement has been confirmed.
THE WHY? The potential acquisition highlights intensifying competition among technology companies to control AI infrastructure, reduce dependence on third-party processors and accelerate the development of advanced generative AI systems. These capabilities could also support the wider adoption of AI-powered product visualisation, virtual experiences and digital content creation across industries, including cosmetics and beauty.
