Beauty entrepaneur Hailey Bieber has officially announced her side in the great cottage cheese debate (is it delicious or kind of grody?)—and as it turns out, she is pro.
The much-maligned health food—that I, too, absolutely love, by the way—has had a major glow-up in the past year. Transcending its reputation as a lumpy cheese eaten mostly by grandmothers across America, it’s now being mixed into pancakes, made into bread, spread over bagels… and, in Bieber’s case, dolloped onto dinner.
“I’m sorry, but my chicken meatballs with tomato sauce, cottage cheese, and parmesan is seriously to die for and one of my favorite things I make,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories with a snap of her dinner. “Don’t knock it until you try it.” In the dish, she’s traded cottage cheese for the standard red-sauce staple of ricotta.
In a head-to-head comparison, cottage cheese comes out on top in nearly every category. Depending on what brand and milk type you choose, FoodData Central says a cup of cottage cheese has around 24 grams of protein and is lower in carbohydrates, calories, and fat, while a cup of ricotta cheese has about 8 grams of protein but less salt content. I love the different cottage cheese options from Good Culture (which are frequently sold out at my grocery store!) because it has active probiotics to help with gut health, too.
Bon appétit!
