The Best Rose Perfumes Pay Respect to the Heritage Note—Then Completely Disrupt It

Rose is a classic symbol of Venusian beauty, a paean to romantic love, and an enduring staple in the fragrance world. A major player in countless classic scents, the flower has an appeal that never seems to wilt—particularly because it lets perfumers’ imaginations run wild as a thicket in full bloom.

“Rose is not one singular olfactive expression,” says Melanie Dir, perfumer and founder of Gamine. “Depending on the variety, terroir, and where it is grown, it can smell incredibly different—from the soft, dewy character of Rose de Mai from Grasse to the richer, spicier facets of Turkish and Bulgarian roses.” Some roses are fresh and green, she adds, while others are fruity, honeyed, deep, or earthy.

    Vogue’s Favorite Rose Perfumes:

The modern rose perfumes highlight this nuance, pairing the flower with notes that bring out its many qualities and layers. “A modern rose is never just a rose as a single-note fragrance,” says Delphine Jelk, Guerlain’s creative director of fragrance. “What makes it modern is contrast, tension, and texture. For me, rose becomes contemporary when you reveal more than its romantic side.”

For instance, she says, pairing rose with incense, patchouli, and smoked or leathery facets brings out its “shadow” side, while adding fresher extractions can have a luminous, transparent effect. “That is often the difference from a more classic interpretation, which may focus above all on the flower’s elegance, softness, and immediately recognizable floral identity,” Jelk says. “Those classic roses can be beautiful, of course, but if they are treated too literally, they can feel ‘old’ or dated.”

Today, Dir says, “Rose’s character has completely opened up. It can be dirty, green, mineral, spicy, woody, even slightly animalic. Perfumers are pushing against the traditional codes of what a rose is supposed to smell like, and that tension has made the flower feel much more genderless and multi-generational.”
