THE WHAT? South Korea has established the Korea Food and Cosmetics Law Association, the country’s first academic body dedicated to research into legal and regulatory issues affecting the food and cosmetics industries.
THE DETAILS The association held its inaugural general meeting in Seoul, where it adopted its constitution, appointed its executive team and approved its business plan and budget. Son Seung-woo, a senior adviser at law firm YulChon, was named the association’s first president. The launch comes as South Korea’s agri-food exports reached US$10.41 billion and cosmetics exports hit a record US$11.4 billion. The inaugural seminar focused on food technology intellectual property and strategies to strengthen intellectual property protection for the K-beauty industry.
THE WHY? The new association aims to support the continued global growth of K-food and K-beauty by providing legal research, policy recommendations and guidance as international safety regulations, intellectual property requirements and non-tariff trade barriers become more complex.
