THE WHAT? Shein reported a near 53 percent decline in first-half operating profit as rising costs and weaker demand weighed on its first financial results since listing in Hong Kong.
THE DETAILS The online fashion retailer reported net revenue growth of just 1 percent for the first half of 2026, while the deterioration in profitability accelerated during the second quarter. Shein had previously warned that disruption linked to the Iran war would increase costs, while tariff and logistics pressures are expected to persist. The company listed in Hong Kong on September 1 at a valuation of approximately US26billion, significantly below its roughly US100 billion peak valuation in 2022. More recent indicators also point to continued pressure, with US sales falling more than 10 percent in the three months through August and early September.
THE WHY? The results increase scrutiny of Shein’s ability to restore profitable growth following its IPO as higher logistics and tariff costs combine with slowing demand across key international markets.
