THE WHAT? Samyang Group has agreed to acquire Japanese flavour and fragrance manufacturer Soda Aromatic as part of its strategy to expand its global specialty ingredients business.
THE DETAILS Through its food subsidiary, Samyang Foods, the group will acquire 100% of Soda Aromatic from current owners Toray and Mitsui & Co. for approximately ¥41 billion (around KRW390 billion). Based in Tokyo, Soda Aromatic is one of Japan’s leading flavour companies and produces flavourings for food as well as fragrance ingredients used in perfumes and cosmetics, including aroma chemicals such as lactones. The company operates seven production facilities across Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore, serving more than 1,000 customers. Samyang said the acquisition will provide immediate access to established production capabilities, technologies and customer networks while accelerating expansion across Asia and supporting entry into North American and European markets.
THE WHY? The deal supports Samyang Group’s broader strategy to shift from commodity-based businesses such as sugar, flour and starch into higher-value specialty sectors, including flavours, fragrances, personal care ingredients and other advanced materials.
