THE WHAT? QVC Group has completed its Chapter 11 restructuring, emerging from bankruptcy with approximately US$5 billion less debt as it seeks to reposition the business around streaming, social media and digital commerce.
THE DETAILS As part of the restructuring, QVC handed creditors US$1.3 billion of new debt in the reorganised company and secured a new US$600 million asset-based credit facility from investors including Strategic Value Partners and Oaktree Capital. The company’s common stock has also been approved to resume trading on Nasdaq under the ticker QVCG, although a date has not been specified. QVC filed for bankruptcy in April with around US$6.6 billion of debt following years of declining TV viewership and cord-cutting, which put pressure on its traditional television shopping model. Its restructuring plan was approved despite objections from preferred shareholders, whose shares were ultimately wiped out.
THE WHY? Reducing QVC’s debt burden gives the retailer greater financial flexibility to invest in its transition away from traditional television shopping and towards streaming, social commerce and digital retail, channels that are increasingly important for beauty brands seeking to reach consumers through content-led commerce.
