Paris Jackson on the Saffron Scent That Reminds Her of Her Father

Paris Jackson is truly showing us her daily routine: Get dressed, do some light glam, go to the studio, work on her music. On August 21, she’ll release her sophomore album, Happiest Day of My Life.

This is truly a moment to celebrate for the singer, because there was a time when she was scared of doing music. “I was playing guitar since I was 13 or 14, but suppressed it as a hobby,” she shares. “In my early 20s, I realized I couldn’t do this anymore—it’s what makes me happy…especially because this was before I found out all the other things that made me happy. [And] when I got sober, it helped me: I realized music really is everything.”

With her art so all-consuming, the rest of her life is simple and focused: rock climbing, hanging with friends, and a recent interest in photography. Her beauty routine, then, is just as relaxed—shared here in her Beauty Secrets with Vogue.

The musician starts with her hair: She doesn’t wash it every day, but has a several-step routine that’s focused on growth and strength. Jackson has about four inches of Great Lengths hair extensions through her blonde and brunette peppered curls. “I buzzed my hair just over 10 years ago, and I realized in the last few years that constantly bleaching and straightening it was not helping it get longer,” she says with a shrug. “I’ve had to do an extension situation, so my day-to-day is trying to take care of the natural texture and let it do its thing. It’s actually been growing!”

She starts with a liberal spritz of hair-strengthening spray, and then a pump of hair serum and a mask mixed in one hand and worked through the lengths. Scrunching the product helps it keep its natural shape. A little heat protectant is used when she’s air-drying it, but her saving grace? A salt spray, which keeps the pieces clinging together without frizz. The finishing product is a dab of hair oil all over, and then Jackson plaits in two protection braids, infused with essential oils.

Next, skin care: She washes her face with a foaming cleanser. “I started taking care of my skin a few years ago,” Jackson says, “I was just doing it wrong. So I was having all of these crazy breakouts. I learned a pretty simple process that works well for my skin and the climate I live in.” Realizing that her pipes and water might be impacting it too, she added a filter to her shower heads and faucets. “That helped with cystic acne,” she says. For those smaller bumps and breakouts, Jackson has begun to avoid oil-based products. Instead, she uses a water-based moisturizer. Then, some tinted sunscreen that doesn’t clog the skin.

“I’ve tried the longer routines, and anytime there’s a big commitment like that, I find myself not doing it,” Jackson adds. “The least amount of pressure for me is better.”

Her makeup routine incorporates about five steps. A Chanel cream eye shadow stick is applied as a contour to her cheekbones, her jawline, and the tip of her nose. “I don’t really play around with makeup so much anymore,” says Jackson. “I used to, especially in my teenage years with my emo phase.… Now I like to keep it simple.” Next is a lip stain; then she brushes up her brows and delicately fills them in with pencil. After the lip stain has had time to settle, she peels it off, adds a lip sunscreen, and contours the lip line with that same eye shadow stick. Then a final slick of Laneige’s hot cocoa lip mask, and highlight on the apples of her cheeks.
