On Reveals LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 Super Shoes, Release Date

On is continuing its mission to dominate long-distance racing with the second generation of its marathon winning Cloudboom franchise.

Previewed earlier this week at the Swiss company’s Zurich headquarters, FN got a first look at the new Cloudboom Strike 2 and the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 super shoes, engineered for marathon racing at the highest level.

In its second generation, the Cloudboom Strike introduces a new evolution to On’s proprietary CloudTec foam engineering system. Called CloudTec Sphere, the foam features engineered cushioning channels “designed to enhance comfort and optimize running efficiency,” the company noted. The system is complemented by the Helion hyper foam (HF) midsole which is 15 percent lighter than the first generation of Cloudboom Strike. The overall race-day shoe weighs 191 grams.

As for its much lighter sister shoe, the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2, comes in at 33 grams less than the Cloudboom Strike 2 at a total of just 158 grams, its lightest shoe to-date. The seamless, glueless, one-piece upper technology that On launched in 2024 helps keep the weight down in this new model.

On noted that the technical features of the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 combine to create a 1.6 percent increase in running economy when compared to leading industry benchmarks, as proven in a recent study by the University of Cape Town.

The company further stated that the new LightSpray model has helped six of On’s athletes to achieve personal bests (PBs), with recent marathon PBs from On athletes including: Hellen Obiri, who improved her time by 1 minute 48 seconds in London; Yeman Crippa, who secured a tactical victory in Paris with a 48 second improvement; and Joe Klecker, who smashed through his personal best by 4 minutes and 41 seconds in Boston.

“The results we’ve already seen from athletes competing in the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2 reinforce On’s position at the forefront of elite road racing innovation,” Nils Arne Altrogge, senior director of innovation at On, said in a statement. “Our brief for the Cloudboom Strike 2 was not just about maximizing speed, but sustaining it as athletes approach the crucial closing stages of a marathon. By combining our LightSpray upper with new CloudTec Sphere technology, we’ve engineered a unique fresh-leg advantage that helps athletes maintain performance deep into the race.”

LightSpray condenses traditional upper manufacturing – which can typically require around 200 steps across multiple facilities – into a fully automated, single-step process. Using a robot arm, the innovative technology sprays 1.5 kilometers of a specialized filament to produce an ultra-light, seamless, one-piece upper in just under four minutes.

Since introducing LightSpray two years ago, On has scaled its operational framework for automated shoe production from the ground up. The brand unveiled the world’s first LightSpray production facility in Zurich in 2025. This was followed by the opening of a second robot production facility near Busan, South Korea, in April.

On’s first mass-market running shoe with the upper technology, the LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, which weighs 205 grams, launched to consumers in March. It was followed by the first collaboration using the technology, the Loewe x On LightSpray Cloudmonster in May.

The new Cloudboom Strike 2, which retails for $250, and the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike 2, which will set you back $310, will launch on July 30. Both shoes will be available at On.com and select premium retail partners.
