As long as the sun continues to shine, we’re still firmly in flip-flop territory when it comes to footwear—even, somewhat controversially, on the commute. But fall is on the distant horizon, and Meghan Markle, it seems, is already one step ahead.

Earlier this week, the Duchess was spotted wearing Hermès’s Santorini sandals: an ankle-strapped alternative to the ubiquitous Orans (and their legions of knock-offs) that adorn the feet of affluent holidaymakers from Nantucket to Notting Hill each summer. But for a special screening of Cookie Queens—the Sundance-premiered documentary executive produced by Meghan and Prince Harry, which follows the highs and lows of Girl Scout Cookie season—in California on Wednesday night, she traded them for a practical pair of tasseled J McLaughlin loafers. A smart addition to city shorts in July, these sorts of flats will also work hard for your wardrobe once September ushers in that back-to-school mood.
