THE WHAT? The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized misbranded and allegedly unlicensed cosmetic products worth more than ₹5 lakh during raids on businesses in Mumbai, as part of a wider crackdown on non-compliant beauty products.
THE DETAILS FDA officials conducted inspections at cosmetic retailers and manufacturers in Mumbai, including a beauty store in Crawford Market and a facility in Kandivali. The raids uncovered products carrying claims related to breast enhancement, fat burning and skin improvement that allegedly lacked mandatory labelling information such as batch numbers, manufacturing licence details and manufacturer information. Authorities also found cosmetics and related products being manufactured without the required licences. In total, products worth approximately ₹5.16 lakh were seized in Mumbai, while a separate operation in Karad resulted in the freezing of allegedly misbranded cosmetic stock valued at nearly ₹29.5 lakh. Legal action has been initiated under India’s Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
THE WHY? The enforcement action reflects growing regulatory scrutiny of cosmetic products making misleading claims or failing to comply with labelling and manufacturing requirements. Authorities say such products may pose risks to consumers because their ingredients, origins and safety standards cannot be properly verified
