How to Master Color Theory in Clothing Like a Vogue Fashion Editor

Until a few years ago, all I really knew about color theory for clothing came from 30 Rock. Liz Lemon, holding up a neon green bridesmaid’s dress, bemoans that she can’t wear the color because “the Clinique lady says I have witch undertones.”

I never considered my own color palette until my friend’s grandmother informed me that I had hit the jackpot. She appraised my pale complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes, and told me that, between the winter, spring, summer, and autumn palettes, I was a winter—someone who looked best in black, white, and jewel tones. She herself was a winter, and so was her husband. “Thank goodness,” she told me. “He matched my furniture.”

But recently, Megan Bentley—AKA the Color Countess—a professional color analyst, informed me that I had it all wrong. I had warm undertones, not cool, and was therefore not a winter, but an autumn. Instead of cool, bright hues, I actually looked best in rich, warm tones like chocolate brown, teal, and eggplant. After a thorough explanation, Bentley swiped a red lipstick across my mouth, told me never to dye my hair blonde, and sent me on my way.

So what did that mean for my wardrobe? Color theory for clothing is, in short, how we use the foundations of art, science, and psychology to inform our outfits. I, personally, am an ardent fan of the all-black look, but my autumn prescription made me rethink the pieces in my closet. In an effort to break away from my habits, I turned to the color wheel.

Here, we break down the steps of how to incorporate color theory into your clothing, no matter your season.

What is color theory and how does it apply to fashion?

Color theory is a principle in fine art, design, and science that concerns how colors interact. It encompasses color harmony, mixing, symbology, and relationships.

Our clothing is often the first thing we use to tell people about ourselves, and the colors play an important role. If you’re hoping to turn heads, you’ll probably gravitate to a bold red, but if you want to blend into the background, you might opt for something more neutral like black or white.

    Let’s revisit the color wheel

Remember this from childhood art class? We’ve got our primary colors, red, yellow, and blue. When we mix them, we get our secondary colors, orange, green, and purple. The wheel below takes it a step further, mixing primaries and secondaries. For instance, purple and red beget a pinky violet, while purple and blue make a cooler indigo.
