THE WHAT? The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) is strengthening its UK manufacturing network through a strategic investment in its Whitman facility, as the site celebrates 60 years of operations, and by bringing luxury candle and home fragrance production capabilities further in-house.
THE DETAILS Established in 1966, ELC’s Whitman facility in Petersfield, England, produces more than 90 million skincare and fragrance units annually for brands including Jo Malone London, Estée Lauder, Clinique and La Mer. As part of the investment, ELC will integrate select luxury candle and home fragrance capabilities from long-time partner Contract Candles, assuming the lease of one of its UK facilities, adding approximately 50 employees over time, and expanding research, development and quality functions. Following the integration, the UK will become ELC’s primary global manufacturing base for candles across brands including Jo Malone London, TOM FORD and AERIN. Since fiscal 2020, the company has invested US$72 million in the Whitman site across automation, sustainability, quality systems and advanced manufacturing capabilities.
THE WHY? The investment is intended to increase operational control, strengthen supply chain resilience and support growth in the premium home fragrance category, while reinforcing the UK’s role as a centre of excellence for fragrance craftsmanship and innovation. The move also responds to growing consumer demand for luxury home scent products and supports ELC’s long-term manufacturing strategy.
