Presented in a woodland forest, today’s Chanel couture show was a real humdinger. All those skirt suits that, when you zoom in closely, are comprised of ropes and ropes of dainty embroidery and lace or dense thickets of exploding floral appliqués. To think of the hours of handwork that went into these marvels of craftsmanship can break the brain, but such a peacocking of skill is also the whole point of this highest form of fashion.
Couture is often a very serious affair. And yet, one of Chanel designer Matthieu Blazy’s greatest achievements in his short tenure at the brand so far has been his light touch—both literally, in terms of airy fabrics, but also of spirit. This collection, when observed up close, is filled with a million little details that reference his inspiration—fairy tales—in the most delightful, adorable way possible.
