A New Summer Collection Offers Sustainable Polos and Swimwear

Beach, please! The month of August is good for one thing, and one thing only: Sunning.

Sure, September may be all about back-to-school business (and New York Fashion Week, natch), but August should be for relaxing, or catching rays by the beach or pool. And if you still have some lounging-around plans to partake in this month, you’re in luck: A new summer drop, courtesy of two sustainably-minded labels, are offering up cool wardrobe essentials for such an occasion—all made exclusively with deadstock fabrics.

New York designer Maayan Sherris (who you may know for her very cool women’s swim line) marked her foray into menswear by teaming up with the L.A.-based brand Trim, designed by Richard Xiang. Together, their new men’s collection and campaign feature Sherris’s swim trunks, tees, and climbing pants made of recycled nylon—set against Trim’s colorful deadstock-cotton polos (prices range from $120 to $250). The duo wanted to prove that, yes, you can embrace summer style in an eco-friendly way. “Lots of men’s swimsuits are ugly—but mine can be worn swimming and running, or just out and about,” says Sherris.

Both Sherris and Trim’s pieces are certainly made for movement: The new collection, photographed by Tair Adato, was inspired by their shared customers who embrace active lifestyles (you know, those who surf or actually work out on the beach, versus just sunbathing). “Working closely with guys that stay active and fit inspired me to dress them for the occasion,” says Sherris. “The body movements in sports challenge me to design new pieces, and to answer to what people need.” Recycled nylon is the perfect material for people who really put their clothing through the wringer. “I’ve been using nylon and manipulating it for quite some time: It’s lightweight and dries fast,” says Sherris.

Many of the pieces shown on models rock-climbing on a beach in Cyprus—a sport that both designers are drawn to for both its athletic prowess and community-building elements. “It’s a sport you can do anywhere with anyone,” says Sherris. (The photographer, Adato, also happens to be a big rock climber.) “Tair and his friend Manu like discovering new spots to climb—they hike there, carry the safety mattress, shoes and chalk, and go for it,” says Sherris. “This is very inspiring to many people—if it’s their other friends, or just strangers that they pass on the way. It seems very fun and refreshing.”
