Bernard Arnault to Receive John B. Fairchild Honor at WWD CEO Summit

Bernard Arnault — one of France’s most successful entrepreneurs and a chief architect of the modern luxury goods industry — will receive the John B. Fairchild Honor at the WWD Apparel and Retail CEO Summit in New York on Oct. 27.

The John B. Fairchild Honor recognizes a career of influence and distinction in the fashion industry. Named after WWD’s legendary chairman and editorial director and chosen by its current editors, the honor was introduced in 2016 as part of WWD’s annual celebration of creative vision, performance and leadership in the fashion industry.

“I am honored to receive the John B. Fairchild Award,” said Arnault, chairman and chief executive officer of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. “I knew well and respected John and his approach to talking about creativity. He broadened WWD’s coverage to go beyond fashion into the people behind the business as well as expanding into beauty and culture, all areas that are important to LVMH.

“I am grateful to the teams at WWD for maintaining his legacy, for their ongoing support to our maisons and for keeping us informed and inspired. Thank you for giving me an honor bearing a legend’s name,” he said.

“WWD’s John B. Fairchild Award honors an industry-defining legacy, and few leaders have shaped global luxury on the scale of Bernard Arnault,” said Amanda Smith, CEO of Fairchild Media Group. “Presenting him with this recognition is a watershed moment not only for WWD, but for the global fashion community. It is a testament to the very definition of leadership and to an individual with the rare ability to redefine the boundaries of vision, scale and craftsmanship.”

James Fallon, chief content officer of Fairchild Media Group and WWD, said: “Mr. Fairchild met scores of designers and executives throughout his legendary and groundbreaking career yet admired and spoke fondly of few, and one of those was Bernard Arnault. He lauded him of course for his business acumen but, above all, for his passion for creativity, one he shared with Mr. Fairchild. He would always talk excitedly about touring stores in Paris with him, and of course offering his honest and unfiltered opinions! It is an immense privilege to present this year’s WWD John B. Fairchild Honor to Mr. Arnault, one that I am sure would thrill Mr. Fairchild himself.”

Arnault built one of the fashion industry’s largest and most successful companies with his long-term approach and an unwavering commitment to products with innovation, heritage, craftsmanship — and some celebrity razzmatazz — baked in.

He oversees an empire of more than 75 brands spanning fashion and leather goods, watches and jewelry, specialty retailing and beauty products — and tirelessly touts the values of engaged family stewardship, and time.

“In this business, you have to be patient,” he told shareholders back in 2012.

The group operates more than 6,800 stores and employs more than 210,000 people. Last year, LVMH recorded revenues 80.8 billion euros, with Arnault trumpeting “the powerful desirability of our brands, which embody creative passion and the pursuit of the utmost quality” and its “ambition of offering our customers extraordinary stores and cultural experiences.”

Driven, indefatigable and exacting, Arnault is admired for his ability to know the minutia of even small brands like Moynat and Krug, while also grasping global economic shifts and trends in consumer behavior. He shuns the word luxury, preferring to call LVMH a maker of high-quality products.

“Our values are creativity, quality, entrepreneurship and now I will add another one, which is the search for meaning, which we must analyze, think about and bring to our customers and our partners,” he told an LVMH shareholders meeting in 2019, only days after the group completed its $2.6 billion acquisition of hotel and leisure company Belmond.

Arnault has been awarded the honorary titles of Grand Cross de la Légion d’Honneur and Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres. In 2026, he was anointed an Immortal and inducted into the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences in Paris.

Other industry leaders who have received the John B. Fairchild Honor include Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld, Leonard Lauder, Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada and Tommy Hilfiger.

Additional WWD honors will be revealed at a later date. The awards gala takes place on the first night of the WWD Apparel and Retail CEO Summit, which is to be held at Cipriani South Street on Oct. 27 and 28.
