THE WHAT? Amazon is expanding its logistics infrastructure in China with new warehousing and distribution centres designed to help Chinese sellers comply with increasingly stringent US customs and product safety requirements.
THE DETAILS Amazon has opened a 20,000-square-metre global warehousing and distribution centre near Shanghai’s Yangshan deep-water port, following the launch of a similar facility in Shenzhen, with a third site planned for Ningbo. The centres enable Chinese sellers to store products locally before shipping directly to US customers via Amazon’s logistics network. Initially focused on ocean freight to the US, the service is designed to simplify customs compliance as US authorities tighten import screening, including new electronic filing requirements for consumer product safety certificates. Amazon says storage costs at the new facilities are up to 45% lower than its US warehouses.
THE WHY? The investment strengthens Amazon’s supply chain capabilities for Chinese exporters while helping sellers navigate evolving US trade and regulatory requirements, supporting cross-border e-commerce as competition from Shein, Temu and other Chinese platforms intensifies.
