THE WHAT? Russia is exploring increased palm oil imports from Nigeria as rising domestic demand and supply diversification efforts create new export opportunities for Nigerian producers and processors.
THE DETAILS Speaking at the 2026 BusinessDay International Oil Palm Summit in Abuja, representatives from the Russian Trade Mission in Nigeria said Russia views Nigeria as a strategic agricultural partner with strong potential in palm oil production and processing. Russia’s palm oil market is estimated to reach up to one million tonnes annually, with demand currently largely dependent on imports. Industry stakeholders highlighted Nigeria’s ambitions to expand beyond raw production into deeper processing and industrial value creation. The development comes as Nigeria continues efforts to modernise its palm oil industry, reduce import dependency and strengthen export competitiveness through investment, processing upgrades and supply chain development.
THE WHY? The move reflects growing international demand for diversified agricultural supply chains while positioning Nigeria’s palm oil sector for greater participation in global trade and value-added manufacturing.
