THE WHAT? Secondhand marketplace Vinted has increased monitoring and removed listings suspected of containing stolen merchandise following widespread looting of luxury and beauty retailers across France.
THE DETAILS Vinted has introduced additional checks to identify suspicious listings, remove potentially stolen goods and suspend accounts breaching its marketplace rules. The measures follow violent protests over rising living costs, during which stores belonging to luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Celine were reportedly targeted. Beauty retailer Sephora also confirmed break-ins at several locations. French authorities are working with e-commerce platforms to prevent the resale of looted merchandise, while Vinted has confirmed its cooperation with law enforcement.
THE WHY? The crackdown highlights the growing importance of marketplace monitoring, product traceability and retail security for luxury and beauty brands. The resale of stolen merchandise presents risks to brand protection, authorised distribution networks and consumer confidence, placing additional pressure on digital platforms to strengthen enforcement.
