THE WHAT? French cosmetics exporters are experiencing customs clearance delays in China, with industry association Cosmetic Valley linking the disruption to growing trade tensions over European fast-fashion import restrictions.
THE DETAILS Cosmetic Valley President Marc-Antoine Jamet said some French cosmetics companies have reported approximately 15 percent of their products delayed by Chinese customs and registration procedures. The disruption follows France’s introduction of penalties on ultra-fast-fashion imports and European measures targeting low-value parcels, which China has criticised as discriminatory. China is France’s second-largest cosmetics export market, worth €1.8 billion annually, out of total French cosmetics exports of €22.4 billion. The delays add to existing trade pressures from US tariffs.
THE WHY? The disruption highlights the vulnerability of European cosmetics manufacturers to international trade disputes, with customs restrictions potentially affecting distribution, product availability and access to strategically important export markets.
