This week, the global cosmetics and personal care industry saw significant movement across retail, investment and innovation, with acquisitions, distribution partnerships and manufacturing expansion joined by regulatory, leadership and portfolio developments.

Beauty retail underwent further change. M&S partnered with Sephora to launch beauty destinations across 100 UK stores, while Kiehl’s opened a European flagship on London’s Carnaby Street. Clicks Group took control of premium beauty retailer ARC, &honey expanded its US distribution through Ulta Beauty, and Shinsegae targeted the US with a new K-beauty retail platform.

Deal-making was another major theme. Sycamore Partners, owner of Walgreens, moved closer to a potential US$9 billion sale of Boots. Armani prepared for discussions with L’Oréal, LVMH and EssilorLuxottica over a potential minority stake sale. Inflexion invested in Manucurist to support international expansion, while L’Oréal and Nykaa partnered to invest in emerging Indian beauty brands.

Science and product development also moved forward. Amorepacific invested in Junevity to develop next-generation skin rejuvenation technology and partnered with Kurly to create exclusive beauty products. Bath & Body Works broadened its personal care portfolio with the launch of its sensitive skin-focused Essentials franchise.

In capital markets, L’Oréal raised €2 billion through a triple-tranche bond offering. Oura postponed its planned US IPO despite strong investor demand, while Shein reported a 53 percent decline in operating profit in its first results since going public.

On the manufacturing side, Unilever increased its capacity in Egypt with a new Sunsilk production line. Dyson, meanwhile, addressed a fault affecting its CameraJet toothbrush following reports of water seepage.

Executive appointments included Chanel naming Lucia Pieroni Creative Makeup Director, Kao appointing Laura Hogan Chief Marketing Officer of Molton Brown, and Treatwell naming Coline Herné Chief Marketing Officer.

Workplace policies were also on the agenda, with Lush extending its six-month paid parental leave programme to retail and manufacturing employees in the US.

Regulatory, legal and trade developments spanned several markets. US lawmakers sought answers from Revlon following FDA manufacturing findings, while P&G resolved an Italian investigation into advertising for Braun hair removal products. The US and China also agreed tariff reductions covering approximately US$30 billion of goods.

Elsewhere, Scarlett Johansson’s skincare brand The Outset announced its closure, adding to a week in which portfolio decisions ranged from new market investment and distribution agreements to brand exits.

Across the week, beauty businesses balanced expansion with consolidation: retailers opened new routes to consumers, investors backed international growth, manufacturers added capacity and brands reassessed where to deploy capital. Scientific partnerships, regulatory scrutiny and changing portfolio priorities added further momentum to an increasingly complex global cosmetics and personal care market.
