THE WHAT? India has introduced new packaging rules for cosmetics and toiletry products, including soaps, shampoos and toothpaste, making vegetarian and non-vegetarian origin labelling mandatory.
THE DETAILS Under amendments to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, products of vegetarian origin must display a green dot, while those of non-vegetarian origin must carry a red or brown dot. The mark must be positioned at the top of the principal display panel. The changes were introduced by India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs and came into effect this week.
THE WHY? The regulation creates a new compliance requirement for cosmetics and personal care manufacturers and brands selling packaged products in India, with affected companies required to review product classifications and packaging to meet the new labelling rules.
