    Snail Mucin

When K-beauty broke into the US market in 2016, snail mucin was the introductory ingredient that got everyone hooked. Sure, it was the novelty of smearing snail mucus on our skin that first caught our attention, but its impressive results kept us as long-time fans. Even with buzzier ingredients 10 years later, this remains the gold standard. “Snail mucin has been a staple in Korean skincare for years,” says Charlotte Cho, co-founder of K-beauty marketplace Soko Glam and founder of skin-care brand Then I Met You. “It’s incredibly hydrating, helps support the skin barrier, and can improve the look of post-breakout marks and rough texture over time.”

Dr. Chang agrees and explains that it is rich in glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants to provide that needed hydration and help support the skin barrier, making it perfect for dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin. “It gives skin that healthy, bouncy glow without feeling heavy,” adds Cho.

Products like the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, a classic snail mucin product that Dr. Chang calls “one of the best examples of barrier-focused skincare,” is rich in humectants and proteins. Your skin will feel softer and more hydrated after consistent use. Cho’s The Klog Snail Mucin Energy Essence is made with 90% snail secretion, panthenol, and yam extract to not only boost hydration and reinforce the skin barrier, but to get that signature “glass skin” look.
