It-bag this, shoe of the season that: Katie Holmes has long been the arbiter for a particular strain of downtown cool style—with an enviable collection of accessories to boot. Whatever Holmes is toting or throwing over her shoulders, women across the major East Coast cities are spotting and swiftly adding to cart. That could be a classic quilted Chanel 19 Flap Bag, the sleek Perriand top-handle city bag by Métier London, the trapezoid Akris Ai shoulder bag, an iconic Celine Triomphe, and several shapes and sizes from her go-tos Manu Atelier, of which the brand’s it-girl staple, Le Cambon, is a fave. It could even be a canvas tote from the famed Strand Bookstore that gets the girls going. Easy, breezy, Katie.
Yesterday, though, Holmes made schleppin’ through the city look cool and composed with not one, not two, but three covetable carry-alls. Out running errands, the actor and director wore and oversized and airy white shirt, denim mom jeans cinched at the waist with a black belt, and black strappy ballet flats. Very much the Katie Holmes style formula. She completed her casual look with a large, rounded square Louis Vuitton over-the-shoulder bag with the iconic mongram print, plus Tod’s Di Bag Folio in white leather, and a bright orange tote. (Shades of satsuma and coral have lived large in Holmes’s summer wardrobe, having been spotted with a ripe-colored Ferragamo mini clutch and in Khaite’s coral-toned, ruched Inara top when out and about with her rumored boyfriend Jason Bard Yarmosky.)

What makes Katie Holmes’s style so good is how both versatile and replicable it is. Just like another downtown style disciple, Jennifer Lawrence, Holmes anchors her outfits with effortless staples–think La Ligne pants and Isabel Marant slip skirts, shirts from The Anteros, and loose denim jeans. Add in whatever statement shoe or bag you like, and you’ve got it.
