Nike, Hyperice Introduce Vibrating and Heated Recovery Slides

Nike’s mind-altering slide has been one of the biggest bright spots for the company this year, and it’s now preparing to release another advanced form of the silhouette loaded with recovery features from Hyperice.

The Hyperice x Nike Air Zoom Hyperslide offers both vibration and heat in a slip-on package. Both sensations come via a removable and rechargeable pod that slots into the strap, spreading out massaging waves and temperatures of up to 117 degrees Fahrenheit. Sitting underneath the foot is a full-length Zoom Air unit, which doesn’t just offer comfort but also serves as a conduit for the vibrations and heat.

“We were really trying to land this to where, yeah, it’s an expensive slide, but it’s also where we want it to be with the value proposition,” Hyperice founder Anthony Katz told Footwear News. “You’re getting the most luxurious slide with a little bit of tech and the versatility of it.”

The slides retail for $250, compared to $900 for the Hyperboot that offers compression massages and heat and launched last year as Hyperice and Nike’s first footwear project. Whereas the boot was led more by Hyperice in a bid to offer its recovery tools in a more mobile package, the slides were driven more by the Swoosh in the name of making the ultimate version of the silhouette.

Typically, Nike uses its Air Zoom units for responsive cushioning in its performance footwear, including basketball and running. The air pressure is dialed down here, though, to prioritize comfort over the transference of energy through strides. Whereas Air Zoom units typically have a pressure of 12 to 20 pounds per square inch, those in the slides are tuned to just 5 PSI.

If the Hyperslide Pod were packaged with a traditional foam slide, the material would dampen the vibrations — much like how foam mattress companies advertise movements on one side of the bed not being felt on the other. But because of the conduction properties of the Air Zoom unit, the vibrations can be felt underfoot despite originating from above.

Battery life on the pods can last for up to one hour, depending on the intensity of vibration and heat. Additional pods can also be purchased separately for the seamless transition of a drained pair for another that’s fully charged.

Since the Mind 001 mule was introduced in January, Nike has sold through each release for the shoe that uses pressure points to induce feelings of calm and focus. Chief executive officer Elliot Hill said the company is ramping up production to meet demand — and if the Hyperslide is likewise a hit, Katz confirmed there won’t be any artificial throttling.

“When it comes to a functional product like this, we, like Nike, want to give athletes the most access possible.” Katz said. “So we wouldn’t withhold it if it’s being well-received.”

The Hyperice x Nike Air Zoom Hyperslide will release Sept. 29 through both parties’ websites and select third-party retailers.
