What to Pack for the Greek Islands, According to a Vogue Editor

The simple answer to the question of how to pack for the Greek islands is this: lightly. You don’t need a million outfits or fancy shoes, and you definitely do not need a massive suitcase to be hauling up and down narrow roads that are usually hilly and always uneven. This is not to say I follow my own advice—in the summers, I’m usually in Greece for longer stints visiting friends and family, so I bring my largest checked bag and commit to looking like a fool on the cobblestones, but you can be better than me.

No matter which of the islands you choose, the base for your on-the-go wardrobe can be relatively simple. The days are hot and dry; the evenings can get chilly; the wind, especially the Meltemi that whip through the Cyclades, will not be ignored. Prep accordingly with lightweight pieces—swimsuits, breezy linen tops and dresses—and a couple cozy knits or long-sleeve shirts to layer over top when the temperatures dip.

From there, let your itinerary guide you. The outdoorsy traveler hiking the gorges in Crete or the trails in Andros should bring a pair of sturdy shoes, a hat for sun protection, and tons of SPF. The island-hopper who wants to pack in as many whitewashed port towns into a week as possible should dabble in minimalism: the smallest suitcase you can manage, and a closet of versatile basics. The history lover waiting to explore the ruins of Rhodes or the UNESCO site of Corfu should mix in a few more city-appropriate items—including comfortable walking shoes.

My preferred routine is neither so adventurous nor so educational, toggling mostly between lazy days on the beach and long meals at tavernas. This summer, I’ll be going to five islands, with stops home in Athens in between to do laundry and recharge; spread out over three weeks, here’s exactly how I’m packing for a vacation in Greece.

    The Plane Outfit

Athens is a 10-hour flight from New York City, and I can’t bear to be cold on a plane—nothing thin and flimsy or cropped will do, so for me, jeans it is. In the summer, sweaters are probably the bulkiest thing you’ll be packing; why not bring yours on the trip over to free up space and double as a blanket? A good tote bag is a must (something in a durable canvas will also double as your beach bag) and if you can swing it, try to squeeze everything into a carry-on.
