The Best Eye Makeup For Blue Eyes, According To Makeup Artists

Blue eyes are often described as striking, but the right eye makeup can make them look even brighter. Much like finding the perfect lipstick for your skin tone or blush for your undertone, certain shades naturally complement blue eyes, creating contrast that makes them appear more vivid, defined, and luminous.

Vogue’s Favorite Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes:

The good news? Contrary to what many of us were taught during the frosted eyeshadow era, you don’t need to reach for blue makeup to make blue eyes stand out. In fact, makeup artists often recommend the opposite. Warm, contrasting tones–think coppers, bronze, terracotta, and rich chocolate brown–tend to have the most transformative effect. “Opposite colors on the color wheel create the greatest contrast,” is a principle many artists return to, which explains why orange-based shades can make blue eyes appear particularly vibrant.

That doesn’t mean blue-eyed beauty enthusiasts are limited to autumnal hues, however. Burgundy mascaras, plum liners, soft taupes, and even certain shades of khaki can all enhance blue eyes in different ways. And as eye makeup continues its renaissance–with colorful liners, statement shadows and playful mascaras everywhere from the catwalks to TikTok–there’s never been a better time to experiment.

Which eye makeup colors look best on blue eyes?

If you’re unsure where to start when it comes to the best eye makeup for blue eyes, makeup artists tend to return to a handful of shades time and again. Warm bronzes, coppers and terracottas remain perennial favorites, but they’re far from the only options worth considering.

“Warm tones are the best friend for people with blue eyes,” says Chanel makeup artist Marco Antonio. “Copper, bronze, terracotta, and rust are the shades that make blue eyes look almost unrealistically vivid. The contrast between the warmth of the shadow and the coolness of the iris creates a tension that draws the eye in.”

Celebrity makeup artist Buster Knight agrees. “For blue eyes, I love using a bronzer washed on the lids and through the socket of the eye to make the blue pop,” he says. Likewise, celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey favors softer warm tones. “I find shades with a hint of warmth like peach are the most flattering for those with blue eyes,” she says.

That said, blue eyes aren’t limited to bronzes and browns. Antonio points to another color family that often gets overlooked: “Purple tones would be my secret weapon. Dusty mauves, smokey plums, and deep berry tones all share cool undertones that mirror and enhance blue eyes beautifully.”

And if you’re looking for a subtle alternative to classic black liner? Navy deserves a place in your makeup bag, too. “It’s close enough to feel familiar,” says Antonio, “but the similarity in tone to the iris creates a softening effect that makes blue eyes appear larger and more defined.”
