Actor, philanthropist, and all-around American icon Elizabeth Taylor is known for many things: Her violet eyes, over-the-top behavior, love of diamonds… as well as her legendary love life. The actor was engaged 10 times and married eight times (though, it should be noted, there was only seven grooms).
Taylor first appeared in the pages of Vogue at the age of 16 in the November 1948 issue—just after National Velvet but before she starred as Amy in the first Technicolor rendition of Little Women. During her lifetime, she was on the cover of various global issues nine times, and filled the pages countless more.
It’s her style and spirit that continue to captivate the world more than 15 years after her death. Kim Kardashian bought and wore a pair of Taylor’s diamond chandelier earrings (Taylor received them from Mike Todd, husband number three) on the fall 2025 Balenciaga couture runway; Margot Robbie wore possibly her most legendary necklace, the heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond, during the whirlwind Wuthering Heights press tour.
And then there’s Taylor Swift. The subtle (and some, much more overt) homages to the late Taylor just keep coming: the singer dedicated a song to her on her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl, wore a Darlene De Sedle 22K gold and opal diamond suite preveiously owned by the actor while attneding a friend’s wedding, and—if rumors are true—a wedding dress directly inspired by one of the actor’s eight different looks.
Though Elizabeth Taylor walked down the aisle eight times, only once did she do it in a “traditional” bridal gown. Taylor’s first wedding, to Conrad “Nicky” Hilton in 1950, when the actor was a studio darling, came courtesy of MGM, and her elaborate gown with its nipped-in waist was a bespoke creation by costume designer Helen Rose.
