News of a new Christmas-themed Kobe Bryant Protro sneaker emerged in March and now, a first look at the upcoming holiday release has surfaced.
While the Nike Kobe 6 Protro style’s early speculative mock-up offered an accurate glimpse into the gradient-shifting color combination, the in-hand look reveals new details for the soon-to-be-released colorway. With a Black/Venom Green/Purple Venom color combination, the “Coals” sneaker references the lump of coal gift that children who made the “naughty list” might receive come Christmastime.
Based around a dark black base, the Kobe 6 Protro sneaker is livened up a bit through purple and green accents including a streaky, lightning-like pattern which accents the model’s signature polyurethane scale-covered upper. This color combination extends to the translucent rubber outsole, which shifts from a purple heel to a green forefoot.
Christmas-themed Kobe launches are something of a tradition for Nike, Inc. Past releases include one of Bryant’s most beloved sneakers, the Nike Kobe 6 Grinch, which established the line embracing the holiday’s less savory characters and tropes. With the Coals theme, it looks as though the line’s unorthodox approach will carry on.

Highly groundbreaking in terms of basketball footwear design and beloved by players since its 2010 debut, the Nike Kobe 6’s influence lives on today. Caitlin Clark’s debut signature shoe, the Nike Caitlin 1, features a new Opticast upper that’s reminiscent of the scale-coated textured seen on the Kobe 6. And prior to receiving her own signature shoe, Clark frequently wore the Nike Kobe 6 Protro and even received her own PE release.
The Nike Kobe 6 Protro Coals is expected to be released this holiday season for a retail price of $190. The style code for the Christmas-themed sneaker is IO6261-001 and it’s set to be available from Nike’s Snkrs app and select Nike Basketball retailers.
