THE WHAT? Walmart is laying off or relocating around 1,000 corporate employees as part of efforts to streamline its global technology and product teams.
THE DETAILS The retailer said the restructuring follows an internal review led by global technology chief Suresh Kumar and Daniel Danker, Walmart’s recently appointed head of global AI acceleration. According to an internal memo, the company identified overlapping teams working on similar projects and is consolidating operations to improve efficiency. Many affected employees have been asked to relocate to Walmart’s Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters or its Northern California offices, while others can apply for alternative roles within the business. Walmart has increasingly consolidated corporate functions in recent years as it expands investments in technology, automation and AI. The company said the changes are linked to organisational alignment rather than replacing workers with artificial intelligence. Walmart has also unified technology platforms across Walmart, Sam’s Club and its international business as part of its wider efficiency strategy.
THE WHY? The restructuring supports Walmart’s efforts to simplify operations, reduce costs and strengthen its technology and AI capabilities while maintaining long-term sales and profit growth.
