THE WHAT? Coty is facing a lawsuit from DB Ventures over alleged breaches of its David Beckham fragrance licensing agreement.
THE DETAILS DB Ventures, which manages David Beckham’s brand, has filed legal action seeking at least US$41 million in damages, accusing Coty of “flagrant material breaches” of the licence. The lawsuit alleges mismanagement of the brand, including inappropriate distribution such as sales in gas stations.
The case adds to mounting pressure on Coty’s fragrance division, its largest revenue contributor. Coty is also facing a similar lawsuit from Nautica, another brand linked to Authentic Brands Group. The fragrance business is under strain amid licence losses—most notably Gucci—and intensifying competition from major players such as L’Oréal and newer entrants.
THE WHY? The dispute underscores risks around licence management and brand positioning, particularly as Coty navigates broader challenges within its core fragrance category.
