THE WHAT? BASF is exploring further acquisition opportunities across the chemicals industry while pursuing a potential takeover of Evonik, as stronger third-quarter earnings support its consolidation and portfolio restructuring strategy.
THE DETAILS BASF has reportedly increased its offer for Evonik to more than €11 billion following the rejection of an earlier proposal, although no agreement has been confirmed. Chief Executive Markus Kamieth identified Evonik as the company’s preferred acquisition target while indicating that further acquisitions and smaller asset disposals remain under consideration. BASF also raised its 2026 adjusted EBITDA forecast to €7.4 billion–€7.8 billion, supported by a 12% increase in prices and 2% volume growth during the third quarter. The company has reduced net debt by approximately 20% over the past year, strengthening its capacity for acquisitions despite continued pressure on Europe’s chemicals sector.
THE WHY? The developments highlight accelerating consolidation and portfolio restructuring across Europe’s chemicals industry as manufacturers seek greater scale, higher-margin businesses and improved competitiveness. For the cosmetics and personal care supply chain, potential changes in ownership and production portfolios could influence speciality ingredient availability, supplier relationships and long-term sourcing strategies.
