THE WHAT? The UK government has announced proposals to restrict high-risk cosmetic procedures to qualified healthcare professionals, introduce tougher penalties for unregulated practitioners and prohibit certain cosmetic treatments for under-18s.
THE DETAILS Under the proposed regulations, procedures including liquid Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs), deep chemical peels, vampire facials and certain laser treatments would be restricted to appropriately qualified medical professionals. Body filler procedures, including liquid BBLs, would be legally classified as cosmetic surgery and limited to doctors. Other high-risk treatments could be performed by doctors, dentists and specified healthcare professionals with prescribing qualifications. Providers breaching the rules could face unlimited fines or fixed penalties of up to £4,000. The government has launched a consultation ahead of legislation planned for spring 2027, alongside separate plans to introduce licensing requirements for lower-risk treatments such as Botox and lip fillers.
THE WHY? The proposals represent a significant tightening of regulatory oversight across the UK’s beauty and aesthetics industry, addressing concerns over unqualified practitioners and patient safety. The changes could reshape the non-surgical cosmetics market by introducing clearer professional boundaries, stricter compliance requirements and greater accountability for treatment providers.
