THE WHAT? Getty Images has announced plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and return to private ownership as part of a financial restructuring aimed at reducing debt and strengthening its financial position.
THE DETAILS The US visual-content provider plans to begin an expedited prepackaged bankruptcy process following the collapse of its proposed merger with Shutterstock. Under the restructuring agreement, affiliates of the Getty family and Koch Equity Development will acquire full ownership, committing up to US$533 million in new equity. Unsecured bondholders have agreed to eliminate US$270 million in debt, while secured lenders will extend maturities and reduce interest costs. Getty reported approximately US$2.1 billion in debt as of June 2026 and expects to complete the restructuring by the end of the year. Business operations will continue throughout the process.
THE WHY? The restructuring highlights the financial pressures facing traditional visual-content providers as AI-generated imagery transforms the commercial photography and licensing market. For cosmetics and beauty brands, the developments reflect wider changes in the sourcing, ownership and licensing of imagery used in advertising, marketing and digital content.
