THE WHAT? John Lewis Partnership is recruiting more than 10,400 seasonal employees across John Lewis, Waitrose and its distribution network as the UK retailer prepares for the critical Christmas trading period.
THE DETAILS The recruitment drive includes 6,000 roles across Waitrose’s 320 stores, 2,600 positions at John Lewis’ 36 shops and a further 1,800 jobs across distribution centres and the supply chain. The hiring follows investment of more than £1 billion in Waitrose and £800 million in John Lewis stores and technology. Seasonal pay starts at £13 an hour and £14.55 in London, while around 100 positions are expected to go to care-experienced young people as part of the Partnership’s Building Happier Futures programme.
THE WHY? The recruitment underlines the scale of investment retailers are making in stores, staffing and supply-chain capacity ahead of the golden quarter, when Black Friday, Christmas and the January sales generate some of the year’s highest levels of consumer spending.
