The Habit That Could Be Impacting Your Gut Microbiome

Recently, I’ve noticed that my seated posture I naturally gravitate towards—legs crossed, back slightly hunched—isn’t doing me any favors. And I’m not just talking about my back or my circulation. Apparently, the way we sit while eating may also influence our digestive health—and even our gut microbiome.

According to Dr. Álvaro Campillo, a gastrointestinal surgeon and one of Europe’s leading experts on the microbiome, the connection between posture and gut health is both surprising and scientifically plausible. The microbiome—the vast community of microorganisms that lives in our digestive tract—does far more than aid digestion. It also plays an important role in immune function, skin health, and even mental well-being.

    Posture and the gut microbiome

“There is a direct relationship between poor posture and the microbiota due to three effects: slower intestinal transit, which is a risk factor for SIBO; greater accumulation and production of gas; and poorer oxygenation of the digestive tract, which disrupts the digestive system’s defense mechanisms, the first of which is the microbiota,” he explains.

There’s also an indirect effect. “Poor posture often leads to reduced muscle mass, which contributes to increased inflammation and the accumulation of free radicals,” Campillo says.

When you stop to think about it, the connection makes intuitive sense. Slouching compresses the torso, which can interfere with both breathing and digestion. According to Campillo, it also reduces tissue oxygenation and may impair the function of the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating digestion.

“Furthermore, it slows down intestinal transit, leading to increased gas, reflux, heartburn, bloating, and constipation, and it increases the risk of microbial imbalance,” he adds.

    The best posture for digestion

If you’re already focusing on probiotic foods, fiber intake, and eating dinner earlier to support the microbiome, better posture deserves a place on that list, too.

To that end, Campillo recommends sitting as upright as possible while eating, with relaxed shoulders, a straight back, and both feet resting flat on the floor. The goal is to allow your body to breathe comfortably and digest without unnecessary tension.

“Some studies have shown that gas buildup is 10 times lower when sitting upright compared to slouching,” he says, “which contributes to greater digestive comfort and a greater sense of well-being while eating.”

It all serves as a helpful reminder that digestion isn’t influenced only by the food we eat. Our body position, our breathing, and the way we eat all shape the experience. And sometimes, better gut health begins not with a new superfood, but with simply sitting up a little straighter.
